As Aurora Did

When the small town of Aurora
Buried a stranger from the stars,
Despite being unsure of its humanity,
They gave the dead humane respect,
As if the small one is their own.

Heads bared and bowed, these earth-bound folks,
Sent prayers towards the skies
From whence the pilot fell,
Wishing its soul safe and peaceful passage
From this world to the next.

And now I wonder,
After a century and a quarter,
If that little alien voyager
Crashed and died in this Earth now,
Will it be treated with the same respect
And dignity as Aurora did somehow?

I was inspired to write this poem after watching this video about the 1897 UFO incident in Aurora, Texas. While I have my reservations about believing if this incident (and UFO sightings in general) really happened, a small town giving a respectful human burial service to an alien creature over a hundred years ago is still a very nice and wholesome thought.
